Tomas Machac v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the 2024 Shanghai Masters and Machac had won that second round encounter in three sets.
Machac Takes Down Nakashima
It took Tomas Machac some time but in the end he managed to squeeze past Brandon Nakashima in their semifinal to give himself a chance of winning his first ever title at this level. He won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in his semifinal encounter.
Having begun the 2024 season ranked 78th in the world, Machac has climbed up the charts and when the new week begins on Monday, he would have climbed up to 22nd irrespective of this result.
If Machac wins the title, breaking into the top 20 looks like a solid possibility.
And it would be a well-deserved milestone too given Machac’s performances this year which have seen him make the third round at the Australian Open and quarterfinal in Dallas.
Here in Dubai, Machac has gone a couple of notches above the aforementioned showings. He overcame Jakub Mensik, Daniel Altmaier, Learner Tien and Nakashima to set up a title-deciding clash with the experience of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Fokina Ends Shapovalov’s Run
It took Alejandro Davidovich Fokina some time but he finally found a place in the final of an ATP event for the second time in as many tournaments after he edged out Denis Shapovalov in the semis.
Fokina, who was the runner-up at the Delray Beach Open two weeks ago, was a 7/5 underdog heading into his semifinal against Shapovalov who was on an eight-match winning streak.
Two hours and 18 minutes later, Fokina had discovered a way to stall his opponent’s run with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1) win.
Both players dropped their serves four times each but more vitally, Shapovalov had a chance to serve out the set in both the sets but saw Fokina fight back strongly both times before shocking his opponent in the ensuing tie-breaker.
This sets up a delicious final between a youngster looking to break into the top 20 for the first time and an experienced player who was once ranked 21st in the world and is gunning for his maiden title as well.
Machac v Fokina Prediction
This could turn out to be a ripper of a contest that goes all the way to the final set in which Machac might hold the edge.
Machac v Fokina Tips
