Polina Kudermetova has typically made a name for herself at the lower levels of tennis, and between the end of the 2022 season and the start of this year, her ranking has fluctuated between the 100th-200th range depending on her performances at the ITF level.
Which is why when she entered the Brisbane International to kick-start 2025, not too much was expected out of her.
In the qualifiers she overcame Astra Sharma and Sonmez Zeynep to make the main draw but the real glory came afterward. Polina overcame Xinyu Wang in her opener, surprised Liudmilla Samsonova in the second, shocked Daria Kasatkina in the third before overcoming Ashlyn Krueger and Anhelina Kalinina to make it to the final!
And in the title-decider round, Kudermetova managed to take a set off Aryna Sabalenka before going down in three.

Liu Looking to Regain Lost Glory
Back in 2022, Claire Liu had reached the final of the Rabat Open and while she lost that encounter, she had managed to record a win over Ons Jabeur in that tournament.
The following year, Liu went on to make the third round at the Miami Open and the second round of the Australian Open, and continued to eke out victories here and there on the tour. It was that year, she hit a career-best ranking of 52nd in the world too.
Since then, however, Liu hasn’t had the best time on court and also opted to take a break from tennis to tend to her mental health.
Liu’s comeback came this season as she featured in the Australian Open qualifiers but lost in the very first match. Other than a couple of wins on the ITF circuit, Liu was forced to come through in the qualifiers here to feature in her first main draw here since 2023.
