What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Estoril Open?
Hubert Hurkacz surprised the world by going on to win the 2024 edition of the Estoril Open, helped in no small way by the ouster of the defending champion Casper Ruud in the semifinals.
What was interesting to note was that the Polish number one had won seven tournaments at the highest level before this and never on clay, making it a sweet experience of sorts for him.
Having started off the second seed in the competition, Hurkacz took his time to get past Jan Choinski in the second round and was then stretched again in the quarterfinals by Pablo Llamas Ruiz.
Cristian Garin pushed Hurkcz to three sets before the Pole demolished Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 in the final to lift the trophy.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Estoril Open?
Casper Ruud won his first-ever title at the Estoril Open as he overcame Miomir Kecmanovic in the final of the tournament.
Having entered the 28-man singles draw as the top seed, Ruud had a first-round bye and was then stretched to three sets by Joao Sousa in the second round.
A crushing 6-3, 6-0 win over Sebastian Baez followed soon after before Quentin Halys took him to the third set tie-breaker in the semifinals.
Second-seeded Hubert Hurkacz also had an opening bye but crashed out of the tournament in the second when he lost to Bernabe Zapata Miralles in three.
