What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Houston Open?

Ben Shelton clinched the 2024 Houston Open with a hard-fought, three-set victory over the 2023 edition winner Frances Tiafoe in the final. He grabbed the title 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Shelton, who had kick-started the tournament as the top seed, had a first round bye but then faced resistance in each of the following matches he featured in through to the final.

That he was able to overcome all of them with sheer resilience spoke volumes about his growth as a tennis player.

He came back from being a set down to overcome Zizou Bergs in the second round, scraped past fellow American Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 7-6 (9) in the quarterfinals and then overcame clay-court specialist and fourth seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinal to enter the title-decider round.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Houston Open?

For the first time since 2018, Frances Tiafoe won an ATP title and it came at the Houston Open in 2023. He overcame the eighth seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a hard-fought final that went into two tie-breakers.

Tiafoe, who had a first round bye, did not drop a single set in the entire tournament, overcoming Steve Johnson, Jason Kubler and Gijs Brouwer in his previous rounds.

Rain played havoc during the 2023 edition of this tournament which meant many players were forced to play two matches on the same day. Incidentally, Tiafoe played all his four matches over a period of 32 hours.
