What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Marrakesh Open?
Seeing his way back to some form, former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini went on to crush the hopes of the defending champion Roberto Carballés Baena in the final, 7-5, 6-2 to capture the Marrakesh Open title.
In winning this title, Berrettini had grabbed his first at this level since 2022.
Berrettini, who had started off 13/2 odds to win the competition before it started, had entered the Marrakesh Open 2024 as an unseeded Protected Rankings player and stunned Alexander Shevchenko in the very first round in straight sets.
Jaume Munar took him to three sets in the second round before Berrettini usurped the fourth seeded Lorenzo Sonego and seventh seeded Mariano Navonne to make it to the final.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Marrakesh Open?
Played between April 3 and 9, 2023, the Marrakesh Open last season was won by Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
Carballes Baena overcame Alexandre Muller in a hard-fought three-setter, winning 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to grab the title. It was only for the second time in his career had Carballes Baena won an ATP tournament and the first in over five years.
Defending champion David Goffin opted out of the tournament because of fitness concerns while the top seeded Lorenzo Musetti was sent packing by Muller in the quarterfinals.
Britain’s Dan Evans made the semifinals where Carballes Baena edged him out in another three-setter.
Incidentally, there have been only two players from Morocco to have grabbed this tournament victory, namely Hicham Arazi who won the Casablanca Open in 1997 and Younes El Aynaoui who did the same in 2002.
