What Happened in the 2025 Edition of the United Cup?
USA became the first country to win the United Cup for the second time when they defeated Poland in the final. They clinched the title by overcoming Poland 2-0 thanks to a straight-set win for Cori Gauff over Iga Swiatek and Taylor Fritz scraping through to a three-set victory against Hubert Hurkacz.
This was after USA had topped the Group A in the first round with wins over Canada and Croatia. They were joined in the quarterfinals by Poland and Czech Republic from Group B, Kazakhstan from Group C, Italy from Group D, Germany and China from Group E and Great Britain from Group F.
Group F was the most interesting of them with all teams finishing with one tie won nd one lost and each of the teams also ended with three matches won and lost. It was the sets percentage data that was needed as a tie-breaker and Great Britain’s 7-6 record in that pipped Australia’s 6-6 and Argentina’s 6-7.
Unfortunately for Australia, their 6-6 set score also proved to be a hindrance to qualify in the second spot too with China (9-6) and Czech Republic (7-7 with a better games won %) coming through instead.
In the quarterfinals, Kazakhstan overcame Germany 2-1 following the withdrawal of Alexander Zverev, Poland crushed Great Britain 3-0, USA routed China 3-0 and Czech Republic came through against Italy 2-1.
Both Poland and USA won their semifinals 3-0 as well, against Kazakhstan and Czech Republic respectively.
What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the United Cup?
Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber combined to help Germany defeat Poland in the final of the 2024 edition of the United Cup to win their first title.
In the final, Iga Swiatek look to have given Poland a healthy start when she routed Kerber in the women’s singles final but Zverev edged out Hubert Hurkacz in a tough second match. Germany eked out the contest when they won the mixed doubles match.
This was after Germany had overcome Australia 2-1 and Poland defeated France 3-0 in their respective semifinals.
Defending champions USA failed to make it past the group stages despite finishing level on wins with Australia and Great Britain in their group.
Novak Djokovic-led Serbia made the quarterfinal but Alex de Minaur’s straight-set win over Djokovic helped Australia defeat them and make the semifinals.
