Also called the Auckland Open, this is one of the first tournaments played at the start of the tennis season on the women’s circuit.
Auckland is one of the cities in which a competitive tennis tournament was played in the 19th century, where the Auckland Championships was held. It was played between 1886 and 1942 before returning in 1956 as the Auckland Invitation competition.
In 1980, the first ever edition of the WTA Auckland Open was held before it was converted into a Tier V event in 1990.
Following that, it was played as a WTA International in 2009 before returning following a pandemic-induced break in 2023 as a WTA 250 tournament. Among the winners of this tournament, Serena Williams has been one of the biggest names to have done it.

What Happened in the 2025 Edition of the WTA Auckland Classic?
Clara Tauson benefitted from an injury to Naomi Osaka in the final of the 2025 edition of the Auckland Classic as she lifted her third WTA title.
The winner at the 2021 Lyon Open and Luxembourg Open, was down a set in the final before Osaka retired from the match in near-tears. This was also her third title in hardcourt competitions.
In a way, Tauson deserved the title after she overcame a match-point in her second round match against Sofia Kenin and then stunned the top seeded Madison Keys in straight sets in the quarterfinal.
Osaka, whose last title at this level had come at the 2021 Australian Open, dropped just one set in the entire tournament but suffered her abdominal injury at the most crucial juncture in the competition.
What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Auckland Classic?
Cori Gauff made it two title wins in a row when she defeated the second seeded Elina Svitolina in a hard-fought final. The American, who had Rebeka Masarova in the previous year’s final, started off as the top seed in this year’s competition and did not drop a set en route the title-deciding match.
She eased past Claire Liu in the opener, crushed qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova in the second, routed the eighth seeded Varvara Gracheva in the quarterfinals before dropping just four games in her semifinal against fellow American Emma Navarro.
In the final, Gauff was forced to come back from losing the opening set in a tie-breaker to Svitolina but she did so with aplomb to grab the title.
