What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Birmingham Classic?
Yulia Putintseva proved to be a surprise winner of the Birmingham Classic in 2024 with the unseeded Kazakh defeating fellow unseeded player Daria Saville in the final. Putintseva won 6-1, 7-6 (8).
What was remarkable about Putintseva’s victory was she won all but one of her five matches in the tournament in straight sets with only Caroline Dolehide stretching her to three sets. Over the other four matches, Putintseva lost only 21 games.
This was after the top seeded and defending champion Jelena Ostapenko crashed out in the first round while only Anastasia Potapova making the semifinal as a seeded player.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Birmingham Classic?
Jelena Ostapenko usurped Barbora Krejcikova to add another WTA title to her list of triumphs. She won 7-6 (8), 6-4 in a tightly-contested final.
After the defending champion Beatriz Haddad Maia had pulled out of the tournament because of fitness concerns, Krejcikova and Ostapenko started off as the top two seeds in the tournament.
And lo and behold, these two top-ranked players in the tournament also made it to the final.
Ostapenko, incidentally, did not have it easy at all as she went on to drop a set in each of her first four matches. Linda Noskova, Venus Williams (who beat Camila Giorgi in the opener), Magdalena Frech and Anastasia Potapova took a set off Ostapenko but the former French Open winner did not give in.
Krejcikova had a much more straightforward route to the final as she lost just 24 games in the process but up against a stubborn Ostapenko in the final, she did not find the going too easy.
