What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Cleveland Open?

Sara Sorribes Tormo turned out to be an unexpected winner of the Cleveland Open when she overcame the loss of the first set against Ekaterina Alexandrova to grab the final in three.

Benefitting from withdrawals and early losses of some of the top players in the tournament, Sorribes Tormo first made the main draw as a lucky loser. This was followed by the first round retirement of Katerina Siniakova.

The Spaniard then stunned Veronika Kudermetova in the second round before easing past Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals. A straight-set win over Tatjana Maria followed soon after that sent Sorribes Tormo to the final.

Top seeded Caroline Garcia was sent packing in the quarterfinal round by Lin Zhu while the second seeded Barbora Krejcikova was dumped out in her opener.
