What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Guangzhou Open?
Olga Danilovic came through in stunning fashion to win her first title at this level in six years having last won the Moscow River Cup in 2018.
Having reached a career-best fourth round at the French Open earlier in the season, Danilovic routed fellow unseeded player Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 6-1 in the final to clinch the title.
She had earlier gotten past the top seeded Katerina Siniakova in the semifinal after the latter retired from the match in the final set.
Local player and defending champion Wang Xiyu made it as far as the quarterfinals before Lucia Bronzetti got the better of her.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Guangzhou Open?
Chinese player Wang Xiyu clinched the 2023 edition of the Guangzhou Open by overcoming Poland’s and top seed Magda Linette in what turned out to be a one-sided final. She won 6-0, 6-2 to clinch her maiden title at this level.
Unseeded Xiyu did not have too much trouble getting past Nadia Podoroska in her opener, before she edged out Diana Shnaider in the second. Viktoria Hruncakova stretched her to a third set in the quarterfinal before Xiyu routed Greet Minnen in the semifinals.
Second seeded Zhu Lin, also from China, withdrew from the tournament before its start while the third, fourth and fifth seeds – Tatjana Maria, Lucia Bronzetti and Rebeka Masarova – were all sent packing from the quarterfinal stage.
