What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Hong Kong Open?
Entering the tournament as the top seed, Diana Shnaider dropped just one set on her way to clinching the Hong Kong Open title. This was her fourth WTA title of the season, having earlier grabbed tournament wins at Hua Hin, Bad Homburg and Budapest.
Other than her match against Suzan Lamens in which she lost a set in a tie-breaker, the most number of games she dropped in a match were six.
Defending champion Leylah Fernandez was brushed aside in the semifinal before Shnaider routed the second seeded Katie Boulter in the final, winning 6-1, 6-2.
As a result of this performance, Shnaider touched a career-high ranking of 12th in the world.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Hong Kong Open?
In a battle between two unseeded players, Leylah Fernandez defeated Katerina Siniakova in the final of the 2023 Hong Kong Open to win her title at this level. The 2021 US Open runner-up had earlier won the Monterrey Open on two previous occasions.
Fernandez overcame the loss of the first set against Siniakova to grab the win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Earlier, the Canadian had managed to level her first round match against the top seeded Victoria Azarenka to make it a set apiece before her opponent retired from the encounter.
She was pushed to another three-setter by Mirra Andreeva in the second round before beating Linda Fruhvirtova and Anna Blinkova in her next two rounds.
Second seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia hobbled her way to the second round before Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova got the better of her there.
