Played in the Wan Chai District in Hong Kong, this tournament is a part of the WTA 250 series of women’s tennis tournaments and was first played in 1980. Earlier played as a Tier IV event, it returned to the fold again as a WTA International before earning its current status of WTA 250.

Wendy Turnbull won the title twice in its first two editions while the likes of Sabine Lisicki, Jelena Jankovic and even former world number one Caroline Wozniacki have won the tournament once.

Hong Kong is also host to the men’s tournament played on the ATP circuit.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Hong Kong Open?

In a battle between two unseeded players, Leylah Fernandez defeated Katerina Siniakova in the final of the 2023 Hong Kong Open to win her title at this level. The 2021 US Open runner-up had earlier won the Monterrey Open on two previous occasions.

Fernandez overcame the loss of the first set against Siniakova to grab the win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier, the Canadian had managed to level her first round match against the top seeded Victoria Azarenka to make it a set apiece before her opponent retired from the encounter.

Second seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia hobbled her way to the second round before Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova got the better of her there.
