First played on the ATP Tour, the Nottingham Open or the Rothesay Open was then added to the WTA circuit as well. In more recent times, the WTA Nottingham Open is played as a WTA 250 event even as the ATP tournament has been relegated to the Challenger Circuit.

Played in June as a grass court competition, it is used by many top women’s player to fine-tune their preparations for Wimbledon which is held later that month.

The women’s Nottingham competition was first held in 1971 as an ITF event but was cancelled three years later. It was brought back in 2011, again on the ITF circuit before moving to the WTA league in 2015. It has been played since then other than in the pandemic years.

Ash Barty, Karolina Pliskova, Johanna Konta and Beatriz Haddad Maia have all won the title here.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Nottingham Open?

Katie Boulter made it two titles in a row when she lifted the Nottingham Open title in 2024 as well, defeating Karolina Pliskova in three sets in the final. She won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win her third career title, second in this competition and second of the season.

Boulter did not make the strongest of starts as she struggled to get past fellow Briton Harriet Dart in the first round. Straightforward wins over Rebecca Marino and Magdalena Frech followed before Boulter was taken to another three-setter by Emma Raducanu in which the first set tie-breaker had 28 points.

In the final, Boulter came back from being a set down to overcome Karolina Pliskova.

Top seeded Ons Jabeur was knocked out in three sets by Pliskova in the quarterfinals.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Nottingham Open?

In what turned out to be the first all-British final in 46 years, Katie Boulter overcame Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-3 to win her maiden WTA title.

Boulter, who had won herself a wildcard for this tournament, did not drop a single set in the entire tournament but what was also interesting to note was that she did not face a single seeded player through her journey.

After easing past Emily Appleton in the first round, Boulter overcame Daria Snigur in the second before sending fellow British players out in her next three rounds. It started with a win over Harriet Dart, went on to crushing veteran British player Heather Watson before her win against Burrage.

Rather strangely, none of the seeded players made it past the second round leaving all the unseeded players to contest in the quarterfinals. Top seeded Maria Sakkari was sent packing in the second round by Alize Cornet while the defending champion Beatriz Haddad Maia lost her opener to Snigur.
