What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Pan Pacific Open?
Qinwen Zheng continued with her brilliant run in 2024 as the top seeded player went on to grab the title at the Pan Pacific Open, defeating Sofia Kenin in the final.
Zheng, who finished the season ranked fifth in the world, and would go on to end the year as the runner-up at the WTA Finals, added a third title to the season and fifth overall by winning it here. Earlier she had won in Palermo and grabbed the gold medal at the Paris Olympics as well.
The only bit of resistance that Qinwen faced in the entire tournament was in the quarterfinals where Leylah Fernandez took her to a third set. Once she had clinched that 6-3, there was no looking back for the Chinese number one.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Pan Pacific Open?
Veronika Kudermetova, who had come into the tournament as the eighth seeded player, turned out to be a surprise winner of this edition of the tournament. Why surprise? Because there were the likes of Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari, who were all a part of the event too.
In a straightforward final win, Kudermetova stunned the second seeded Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-1 to lift the trophy.
It also turned out to be a very deserving victory because it was Kudermetova who ended the top seeded Swiatek’s stay in the tournament as she defeated her in the quarterfinals. She then edge out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while Pegula overcame Maria Sakkari to set up the final.
