The WTA Pan Pacific Open is a women’s tennis tournament held in Tokyo. It was first played in 1973 and has been held each year with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when the tournament was suspended because of the pandemic.

Having gotten itself a Premier 5 rating in 2009 it was then downgraded to Premier in 2014 before becoming a WTA 500 competition just prior to the pandemic. When it returned in 2022, it fell in the WTA 500 category as had been designed.

Martina Hingis has won this title five times while Lindsay Davenport is a four-time champion at this competition.

In more recent times, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Karolina Pliskova and Naomi Osaka have all won a title here.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Pan Pacific Open?

Veronika Kudermetova, who had come into the tournament as the eighth seeded player, turned out to be a surprise winner of this edition of the tournament. Why surprise? Because there were the likes of Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari, who were all a part of the event too.

In a straightforward final win, Kudermetova stunned the second seeded Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-1 to lift the trophy.

It also turned out to be a very deserving victory because it was Kudermetova who ended the top seeded Swiatek’s stay in the tournament as she defeated her in the quarterfinals. She then edge out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while Pegula overcame Maria Sakkari to set up the final.
