What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA Seoul Open?
After defending champion Jessica Pegula opted out of the competition, it was the third seeded and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia who added another feather to her hat by winning the 2024 Seoul Open.
Haddad Maia, who had three titles under her belt from winning at the 2022 Nottingham Open, 2022 Birmingham Classic and the WTA Elite Trophy in 2023, defeated the top seeded Daria Kasatkina in the final after coming back from being a set down.
After getting a first round bye, Haddad Maia eased past Ajla Tomljanovic and Polina Kudermetova before defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. She went on to win the final 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to lift the trophy.
Kasatkina had dropped a mere 14 games in the lead-up to the final and looked like she was on her way to another easy win when she took the first set 6-1. Unfortunately for her, she failed to live up to that form.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Seoul Open?
Jessica Pegula entered the tournament as a wild-card player and was immediately awarded the top seeding in the tournament. She went on to beat Yuan Yue in the final in straight sets to clinch the title.
The only time that Pegula was tested was in the quarterfinals when fellow American Claire Liu pushed her to the third set but she won it 6-0 in the final set.
The only other seeded player to make it to the quarterfinals was Marie Bouzkova but she was also dumped out by Yuan in two tough sets to leave Pegula the only seed in the semis.
