Qinwen Zheng v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head
These two players have faced off twice before this – at the 2023 Adelaide International and the 2024 Miami Open – and Azarenka has won both times.
Zheng Continues to Search for Wins
According to Qinwen Zheng’s own admission, she had suffered a mysterious ailment in the lead-up to the season which is why she missed all the tune-up events before the Australian Open.
This included the United Cup in which she was expected to lead China before pulling out.
Things haven’t gone her way since as a result.
Zheng did make the second round at the Australian Open but since then she has lost three matches in a row including opening round defeats in Doha and Dubai.
While a bye in the first round obviously helps Zheng, it also means she will now directly face someone of the pedigree of Victoria Azarenka first up. Unless she can come up with a sterling performance, Zheng will start on the back-foot once again.

Azarenka Edges Past Ngounoue
Victoria Azarenka hasn’t had the kind of start to the season she would have liked and traces of that lack of rhythm were on show even when she was on court for her first round match against Clervie Ngounoue.
While Azarenka still won in straight sets, it wasn’t till Ngounoue took her to the second tie-breaker in which they went on till 9-7.
In the end, the hour and 43-minute long event ended with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) scoreline as Azarenka notched up just her third win of the season. She has lost five matches to go with that.
What this means is that Azarenka has now made the second round of this event every single time since 2007 – having also won it twice and finishing runner-up in 2021.
Can she pull off an upset against a struggling Zheng?
Zheng v Azarenka Predictions
Zheng has been tipped as the favourite but at 2/5, her win is far too short and we think the margins are a lot closer than that.
