Jasmine Paolini v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting at the highest level came at the 2023 Australian Open and Samsonova had won that in straight sets. Before that, they had also faced off in the qualifiers of the Saint Petersburg Open and Samsonova was a winner there too.
Paolini Scrapes Past Cristian
Jasmine Paolini was a 3/10 favourite in her third round encounter against Jaqueline Cristian but there were times in the match when things could have gone against her.
In the end, it took Paolini two hours and 24 minutes to find a way past Cristian and cement her place in the last 16 for the second year running.
The first set looked to be headed to the script when Paolini broke Cristian three times but then also lost her own serve on two occasions. Still she came through with ease as she served out the set to love.
Cristian broke Paolini early in the second set and that was all that was needed for her to level the proceedings.
In the third, Cristian led 3-1 at one stage but it was her opponent’s experience in such situations and her persistence that took her to a close win – her eighth of the season to go with four defeats.

Samsonova Surprises Kasatkina
Liudmilla Samsonova came back from a set down to overcome fellow Russian player Daria Kasatkina in a three-setter to reach the fourth round of the competition.
Having scraped past Caty McNally in the second round, Samsonova looked to be at sea when she lost her serve twice in the first set and capitulated to a 6-2 loss.
Kasatkina then broke to take a 2-1 lead and then served for a 4-2 lead before Samsonova turned things around. She broke twice to win the set and then added three more breaks of serves in the decider to grab it 6-2.
This was only the second time this season that Samsonova has won back to back matches, having earlier done that at the Adelaide International. Other than that, she had lost her openers at two of the tournaments and lost in the second round in three of them.
