British fans would be pleased to note that Emma Raducanu has finally won a round at the Miami Open while Camila Osorio was taken down in her opener on day two of the competition.
Raducanu, who has had a struggle all season, needed a tad over an hour to overcome Japan’s 19-year-old Sayaka Ishii 6-2, 6-1.
The former US Open winner, who had featured twice in this tournament before this and lost her openers both times, did not have too many worries here against the world number 188 wildcard entrant.
Things will get a lot tougher for Raducanu now that she will take on a top-10 player in the form of Emma Navarro in the second round.
In another match, 18-year-old wildcard entrant Victoria Mboko overpowered Osorio 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a match lasting a touch over two and a half hours.
Mboko, who has been on a titles-winning spree at the ITF level, had entered the tournament on the back of a 27-1 win-loss record and she lived up to those expectations by sending the player who had defeated Naomi Osaka two weeks ago in Indian Wells Open.
She now takes on Paula Badosa in the second round.
In some of the other matches on the second day of the 2025 Miami Open, McCartney Kessler grabbed a three-set surprise over Marie Bouzkova while Veronika Kudermetova managed to earn herself a straight-set win over Xinyu Wang.
Kimberly Birrell also overcame Anastasia Potapova in a final set tie-breaker while American player Bernarda Pera eased to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ajla Tomljanovic.
