Jessica Pegula v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these players and Pegula has won both times, at the Canadian Open of 2022 and 2023. Both were straight-set wins.
Pegula Ahead When Krueger Retires
In an all-American battle, Jessica Pegula came through and marched into the semifinal when her opponent Ashlyn Krueger retired from their match.
Pegula led 6-4, 2-0 in the match when a thigh injury forced Krueger to call it quits.
This follows a straight-set walloping for Maria Sakkari at the hands of Pegula in the second round which had followed an opening round bye.
In total, Pegula has been on court for around two hours in this competition and while this semifinal will be darn close to the start of the Australian Open, she will be looking to give it her best shot.
Putintseva in a Close Encounter with Shnaider
Yulia Putintseva missed two match-points in the second set before clinching a win in her quarterfinal against Diana Shnaider. This, however, was not before the Kazakh player was on court for a whopping three hours and 14 minutes!
Things could have been a lot different had Putintseva taken her chances at different stages of the match.
She led 5-3 in the first set before being forced into a tie-breaker which she won 7-3. In the second, Putintseva was 3-0 up again only to drop her serve again.
Putintseva then went 6-4 up in the tie-breaker, only to lose it 9-11 – having herself saved three set-points in it.
In the final set, however, there were five breaks of serves in the first six games before the serving sanity prevailed and Putintseva was able to scrape through to her win.
This follows Putintseva’s victories over Donna Vekic and Ons Jabeur in the tournament so far which has taken Putintseva to 23rd on the live WTA Rankings. A win her will help her break into the top 20 for the first time in her career.
