Sakkari v Tomova Head to Head
They first faced off on the ITF circuit in 2016 where Tomova won the final against Sakkari to lift the title on clay.
Since then, they have played each other on three occasions – at the 2022 Wimbledon, 2023 United Cup and 2024 Charleston Open – and Sakkari has won every single time in straight sets.
Sakkari’s Struggling for Wins
Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Maria Sakkari, who was at one point aiming at the world number one ranking only for her to plummet to 31st in the world right now.
That lack of results can be seen in 2025 too, with Sakkari having won just one main draw match spread across three tournaments.
That win came against Linda Noskova at the Adelaide International where Sakkari had earlier been sent packing from the qualifiers before returning to the main draw as a lucky loser.
While defeats to Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula – which has has happened this year already – are probably understandable, Sakkari would be a touch surprised by how she has fallen to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Camila Osorio.

Tomova Finally Notches up a Win
Coming into this tournament, Viktoriya Tomova was on a four-match losing streak since winning her opening round match at the Japan Open late last year. Having shocked Veronika Kudermetova there, Tomova’s run was ended by Diana Shnaider in the second round.
Following that, she had featured in Brisbane, Hobart and the Australian Open but fell in the opening match every single time – losing to Renata Zarazua, Greet Minnen and Daria Kasatkina respectively.
Which is why it came as no surprise she started off a 7/5 underdog against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round here. And in a match lasting an hour and 53 minutes, Tomova pulled off a 7-6 (7), 6-4 shock victory over Bouzas Maneiro.
Tomova missed six set-points, then saved two of them in the first set tie-breaker before squandering another one and winning the set off her eighth. In the second set, she went 4-0 up before the two players traded five more breaks of serves – two of which came for Tomova – and that was enough for her to seal the match.
Sakkari v Tomova Prediction
Sakkari’s poor form notwithstanding we think she will prove to be strong enough to get through this second round test. We are also backing her to finish this off in straight sets.
Sakkari v Tomova Tips
- Sakkari to win: 3/10
- Sakkari to win in straight sets: 10/11
