Alexander Bublik v Aleksandar Kovacevic Head to Head
Bublik and Kovacevic have never faced off in a match before this.
Bublik Begins Title Defence Well
Alexander Bublik had won this title last year but coming into the tournament he has looked anything but a favourite to defend that title.
He had begun the season with a shock, straight set loss to Miomir Kecmanovic in Adelaide before Francisco Cerundolo bundled him out of the Australian Open. Again, Bublik did not win a single set in that encounter.
Which is why, for Bublik to kick-start his campaign here against Dominik Koepfer with a 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 11 minutes would have given him a part confidence, part relief.
Bublik broke Koepfer in the very first game. While he soon dropped his own serve, Bublik broke right back and would go on to get the better of his opponent’s serve on two more occasions in the second set to clinch the victory.

Kovacevic in a Keen Tussle with Bellucci
We had mentioned in our preview to the match between Aleksandar Kovacevic and Mattia Bellucci that the former has had a good run in indoor hardcourt competitions coming into that encounter and that would hold him in a good stead.
And that’s exactly how things went with Kovacevic digging deep in difficult moments during his second round match and coming away a straight-set winner.
Kovacevic was on court for an hour and 46 minutes and never lost his serve despite winning 7-5, 7-6 (5) against Bellucci.
Even more interestingly, he won 89% of his first serve points and earned just one break-point in the entire match – it came in the 12th game of the opening set – and he pounced on it to clinch the win.
This follows victories in the qualifiers over Robin Bertrand and Pablo Carreno-Busta before he overcame David Goffin in three sets.
Bublik v Kovacevic Prediction
Bublik is the higher-ranked player and has a better record overall but we cannot discount Kovacevic’s form indoors. Expecting another keen tussle that could go either way with Kovacevic at 6/5 looking like a tempting option for a win.
Bublik v Kovacevic Tips
- Set Handicap Kovacevic +1.5: 1/2
