Leylah Fernandez v Moyuka Uchijima Head to Head
Their only previous meeting had come on the ITF circuit back in 2019 and Fernandez had won that match.
Fernandez Made Third Round in Melbourne
While Leylah Fernandez had a mixed start to the season in the lead-up to the Australian Open, she would have been reasonably pleased with her performance at the season’s first major.
After winning against Donna Vekic and losing to Cori Gauff at the United Cup, Fernandez came through the qualifiers in Adelaide to make the main draw. And there, she was edged out by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the very first round.
Which is why wins over Yulia Starodubtseva and Cristina Bucsa in the first two rounds at the Australian Open would have been a decent turnaround for Fernandez.
Unfortunately for the Canadian, she was drawn to take on Gauff yet again and for the second time this season she fell in straight sets to the American player.

Uchijima Replaces Alexandrova
Moyuka Uchijima was looked to have continued down the same path she had started this season on – a losing one – when she was knocked out of this competition in the second qualifier by Sonay Kartal.
Fortunately for Uchijima, Ekaterina Alexandrova opted out of the competition after deciding to rest from the tournament she was the first in line as a lucky loser.
Now while Uchijima might have made it through despite her qualifiers loss and that would bring home a bigger pay-cheque, she would have to do a lot better than she has in the season so far.
Uchijima started off with back to back losses at Brisbane and Adelaide, and while she then shocked Magda Linette at the Australian Open, she lost to Mirra Andreeva in the second round there.
Another loss followed at the Singapore Open where she went down to Olivia Gadecki before avenging that in the first round of the qualifiers here.
Can she put up a fight here?
