Reilly Opelka v Alexander Shevchenko Head to Head
Opelka and Shevchenko are facing off for the first time in their careers.
Opelka Returns after Strong Start to 2025
Injuries have laid Reilly Opelka low for a while, so it wasn’t a surprise that not much was expected from him even when he returned to the circuit earlier this year.
He featured in the Brisbane International as his first tournament of the season, having gone in ranked 293rd in the world.
Less than a week later, Opelka had made the final there, which included wins over Novak Djokovic and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and while he was forced to retire from that encounter because of a wrist issue, he had enough to make fans believe again.
Opelka then made the second round at the Australian Open but was ousted in a tough five-setter by Tomas Machac, giving enough indication that he is back close to his peak physical condition.

Shevchenko Hoping to Do Better Than 2024
A little less than 12 months ago, Alexander Shevchenko had hit his career-best ranking of 45th on the ATP charts.
A torrid 2024 season followed and the Kazakh has now fallen to 82nd in the world and he could down a lot further if he doesn’t arrest this poor performance slide quickly enough.
Shevchenko has a good result to fall back on – he was a straight-set winner over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the United Cup, which in turn helped his country make the semifinal.
He would go on to lose to Pablo Carreno Busta and Hubert Hurkacz in that tournament before drawing up Carlos Alcaraz in the first round of the Australian Open – losing in straight sets.
Against Opelka, Shevchenko will need to find a way to get past the American’s serve but that’s not something a lot have managed to do.
Opelka v Shevchenko Prediction
Reilly Opelka might not be playing a lot of tennis but this shouldn’t cause him a lot of issues. Sure, we could see a tie-breaker – or two – but we are still expecting a straight-set win for him.
Opelka v Shevchenko Tips
- Opelka to win: 2/5
- Opelka to win in straight sets: 6/5
