Nuno Borges v Otto Virtanen Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings, one on the Challenger circuit in 2022 and the other at the 2024 Davis Cup and Virtanen has won both times.
Borges Solid for the Season
Having won his maiden ATP title last year on the clay courts of Bastad and with a reasonably solid record on clay in his career, it would have been quite reliving for Borges to kick-start the season on hardcourt surfaces and do as well as he has this year.
At each one of the five tournaments he has played so far in 2025, Borges has won at least a round with his most superb effort coming at the Australian Open where he overcame Alexandre Muller and Jordan Thompson to make the third round.
Before that, Borges had also shocked Jakub Mensik on his way to the Auckland Open semifinals. And more recently, just a week prior to this, he made the second round in Marseille before losing to Zizou Bergs.
With this kind of form under his belt, Borges will be confident of going past his opponent for the first time in his career.

Virtanen Makes it as a Lucky Loser
Despite losing to the out of form Botic van de Zandschulp in the second qualifier round of this tournament, Otto Virtanen has made it through to the main draw after the withdrawal of Ugo Humbert.
Earlier in the qualifiers, Virtanen had overcome Terence Atmane in the opening round which was just his second win of the season.
The first had come in the opening round of the Marseille Open and it’s one that should fill him with confidence. There, he had come back from being a set down to upset the 1/3 favourite Sebastian Korda before Daniel Altmaier got the better of him in the second.
Taking on Borges in this form won’t be easy given Virtanen’s form but he would do well to remember he had begun the 2024 season ranked 168th in the world and ended the year in the top 100.

Borges looks to be playing far too much of solid tennis to lose this one to a player ranked outside the top 90. A straight-set win could be in the offing here.
