Victoria Azarenka v Clervie Ngounoue Head to Head
Azarenka and Ngounoue have never faced off before this.
Azarenka Falling Away Quickly
Victoria Azarenka had had a good start to the 2024 season in which she made the semifinal in Brisbane, entered the fourth round at the Australian Open and was a quarterfinalist in Doha.
She has played all those tournaments along with another one in Dubai and won just two matches so far. The first came against Maya Joint in Brisbane and Azarenka then defeated Anhelina Kalinina from being a set down in Dubai.
Other than that, Azarenka has lost four including one to Marie Bouzkova, Lucia Bronzetti and Amanda Anisimova.
More recently, Iga Swiatek walloped her 6-0, 6-2 in Dubai and Azarenka will need a lot to come back from that.

Ngounoue Shock Entrant into the Main Draw
Just 18 years of age, Clervie Ngounoue is ranked 259th in the world and a former Wimbledon junior’s singles champion.
Less than two years on, Ngounoue will be making her debut on the WTA circuit when she takes to court for her first round match here at the Indian Wells Open.
Ngounoue was awarded a wildcard into the qualifiers after having climbed up from 280th to her current ranking thanks to a title win on the ITF circuit in Birmingham and a couple of other finals as well.
Even then, Ngounoue was a distant second-favourite coming into her qualifiers here, against Rebecca Marino and Sonay Kartal. She defeated them both and will now be playing her first ever WTA-level match.
Can she spring a second surprise here?
Azarenka v Ngounoue Predictions
It’s interesting to see how the match-winning odds have been for Ngounoue through the qualifiers and now against Azarenka. She was 8/5 to defeat Marino, 2/1 to overcome Kartal but back to 8/5 against Azarenka. A lot of this to do with the way she has played in the qualifiers but some of it could also be related to Azarenka’s form. At 1/2, Azarenka might not be a bad option to be backed.
