What Happened in the 2025 Edition of the ATP Brisbane International?
In a tournament that had the likes of Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe, it was a surprise that the final turned out to be between two unseeded players. In the end, Jiri Lehecka won the title in a damp squib of a final in which his opponent Reilly Opelka retired in the first set because of an injury.
Lehecka was leading Opelka 4-1 when the American threw in the towel.
This was Leehcka’s second career title following a victory at the Adelaide International the previous season.
Before his retirement in the final, Opelka turned out to be the star performer when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal in straight sets. In fact he did not lose a single set in the entire tournament before his retirement.
Lehecka, on the other hand, dispatched Holger Rune in the very first round and then led Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinal when the Bulgarian also retired from that match.
What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the ATP Brisbane International?
In a battle between the top two seeds, Grigor Dimitrov defeated Holger Rune in the final to clinch the title. It was his ninth career t*itle and first in seven years having last won the 2017 ATP Finals.
Dimitrov had a tough draw, needing to overcome Andy Murray in the first round which he did in three sets. This was followed by straight-set wins over Daniel Altmaier, Rinky Hijikata and Jordan Thompson before overcoming Rune 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Other than these two seeds, however, none of the other seeded players made it past the second round. In fact only one other seeded player, Ugo Humbert, made the second round with five seeds crashing out in the opener itself.
