In what turned out to be a stunning result for Cori Gauff, she crushed the resurgent Sofia Kenin while Elena Rybakina was sent packing by Ashlyn Krueger in their respective second round match at the 2025 Miami Open.
Gauff needed a mere 47 minutes to move into the third round after registering a crushing 6-0, 6-0 win over Kenin, turning out to be the second occasion on which she had double-bagelled an opponent in her career.
Having beaten Kenin earlier at the Australian Open as well, Gauff had entered this match on the back of just two wins from the previous six wins and a few questions hanging over her form.
She dispelled all of them with what she described as a “great day” and will now face Maria Sakkari in her next match. Sakkari needed three sets to get past Lucia Bronzetti in her previous round.
Also winning her second round match today was the world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who routed Viktoriya Tomova 6-0, 6-3 but there were a couple of other shock results.
Sabalenka’s next opponent will be Elena-Gabriela Ruse who overcame Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-4 in one of those surprise results. The bigger shock came at the hands of Ashlyn Krueger who sent the seventh seeded Elena Rybakina packing. She won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and will now face Leylah Fernandez who eased past Alycia Parks.
Naomi Osaka also advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Liudmilla Samsonova, as did Jasmine Paolini, Ons Jabeur and Magda Linette.
