In what turned out to be one of the matches of the day at the 2025 Miami Masters, Joao Fonseca edged out Learner Tien in a battle of teenagers to advance to the second round.
On his debut in Miami, Fonseca was on court for two hours and 23 minutes in what turned out to be a physical battle against Tien before registering a 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Fonseca, who would later go on to call Tien a great fighter, also praised the support he got from Brazilian fans for their support. Earlier in the third set, Fonseca would also need some support from the medical support who was called to treat him for dizziness and nausea.
Also in action on the day was another Next Gen player in the form of Jakub Mensik who needed another three-setter to overcome Roberto Bautista Agut. It was his serving that helped him no end with Mensik winning over 80% of his first serve points, aided in no small way by his 23 aces.
In an all-American battle, Reilly Opelka overcame Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 7-6 (4) while three Italian players, Lorenzo Sonego, Luciano Darderi and Matteo Arnaldi all made it through to the second round as well.
Another American Jenson Brooksby did not have the same luck though as he fell to Roman Safiullin 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Britain’s Cameron Norrie was dumped out in the first round too, losing to Yunchaokete Bu, 6-4, 6-2.
Kei Nishikori withdrew from his all-Japanese battle with Yoshihito Nishioka who would later retire from his match against the lucky loser Hugo Gaston.
