Fritz Eases Past Garin
For the second time in a row, Taylor Fritz dished out a performance that would have made the other top players stand up and take notice.
Sure, it came up against a player like Cristian Garin who has struggled to get going in recent times and has usually done well only on clay but Fritz did not even give him a chance to breathe.
In a match that went on for a mere hour and 24 minutes, Fritz won 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 with no break-points on his serve. The American won 80% of his first serves and broke Garin seven times in the entire match.
This follows his straight-set win over Jenson Brooksby where he lost just five games.
Monfils Has No Trouble against Altmaier
While Gael Monfils had used up a lot of time in getting through his opener against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, things were a lot different, and became a lot easier when he faced off against Daniel Altmaier.
Altmaier, like Garin, is more of a player on clay and Monfils took full toll on the faster courts at the Australian Open as he ran him down in straight sets.
There was a fight from Altmaier, especially in the first and third sets, and Monfils was also broken thrice in the match but that did not stop the Frenchman from completing a 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory.
That gives Monfils an 8-1 record for the season following his title win at the Auckland Open and a second round exit at Brisbane. So far this year, Monfils’ only defeat has come at the hands of Novak Djokovic.
