Kasatkina was on court for a mere hour and 14 minutes as she raced away to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Yafan to cement her place in the third round of this tournament for the first time since 2022 and just her third time ever.
The world number 10, who has never made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open before this, faced seven break-points in against Yafan but did not allow her opponent to convert even one.
Instead, she broke her Chinese opponent five times to take her season’s record to 5-2 on win-loss following her third round appearance in Brisbane and a quarterfinal in Adelaide.
Putintseva Easy Winner over Zhang
Just like Kasatkina, Yulia Putintseva also did not have a lot of trouble getting past second round opponent, another Chinese player.
This was Shuai Zhang who has been off the courts for longer than she has been on them for over a couple of years now due to fitness concerns. And Putintseva turned that into her advantage.
She needed a mere 63 minutes and cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win despite losing her serve once, which came against the run of play in the sixth game of the first set. What was the score at that point? 5-0 in favour of Putintseva.
This followed a stunning, comeback from behind win over Elina Avanesyan in the first round and a semifinal appearance at the Adelaide International.
