Cori Gauff v Belinda Bencic Head to Head
Two previous meetings between Gauff and Bencic have been shared at one apiece.
Bencic won a three-setter at the 2021 Adelaide International before Gauff made it 1-1 with an easy win in Washington in 2023.
Gauff Magic Continues against Fernandez
Leylah Fernandez has had a solid run in recent times but coming up against Cori Gauff, even she knew she needed a miracle. Because that’s the kind of form that Gauff is in, having entered the Australian Open on the back of five successive straight-set win.
That included a victory over Iga Swiatek too.
And she continued to go on her merry ways when she routed Sofia Kenin and Jodie Burrage in the first two rounds here to seal her third round berth.
Fernandez put up some fight in the opening set by holding on to her serve over the first three games but Gauff broke her in the seventh game and wrapped things up quickly after that.
In the second set, the difference in quality became even more perceptible with Gauff running away with three successive breaks of serves to clinch a 6-4, 6-2 win.
That’s Gauff’s 10th win a row which includes two at the end of the previous season and an 8-0 record this year.
Bencic Benefits from Osaka Injury
Naomi Osaka was always under a bit of an injury cloud after she was forced to retire from the final of the Auckland Open and it was in the third round that her fitness concerns reared their ugly head again.
The beneficiary from Osaka’s problems and her subsequent retirement from her third round match was Belinda Bencic, who marched into the fourth round. Bencic, at that time, had won the opening set in a tie-breaker.
What must be added here is that Bencic trailed Osaka 1-4 at one stage before her injury concerns made it more and more difficult for her to continue in the same vein.
This followed Bencic’s straight-set wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Suzan Lamens over the first two rounds.
Can Bencic continue to remain as solid as she has been in this tournament?
Gauff v Bencic Prediction
Bencic’s good comeback notwithstanding, Gauff holds all the aces and will be our pick to not just win this but to also do that in two.
