If Leylah Fernandez were to assess her season so far, she would probably call it a modest success or slightly underwhelming but definitely not with any kind of roaring results to go for her.
There have been three occasions when Fernandez has looked like she would be able to convert her starts in tournaments into something substantial but has then fallen away.
It began at the Australian Open where she reached third round, continued at Abu Dhabi where she was a quarterfinalist and saw Fernandez make the third round in Doha as well. Unfortunately for the Canadian player, her journey was ended at that stage at each of those tournaments.
While a defeat to Cori Gauff might not be much of a surprise, Fernandez would have been disheartened to have not been able to get the better of the likes of Ashlyn Krueger, Amanda Anisimova and Elise Mertens – whom she lost to in her Dubai opener.

Cristian Routs Kudermetova
Having gone into her first round match against Veronika Kudermetova as a heavy 5/2 underdog, Jaqueline Cristian found a way to overturn those odds.
In a match that lasted just an hour and 45 minutes, Cristian defeated Kudermetova 6-2, 6-3 to register her first ever win in the main draw of the Indian Wells Open.
Where Cristian scored over her Russian opponent was her ability to remain calm under pressure, saving five of the six break-points she faced. She herself got six break-points and broke her opponent on four of those occasions in turn.
Cristian has been able to nibble away at some good results this season and as a result of her third round appearance at the Australian Open and second round in Auckland and Merida has gone up six spots on the rankings from the start of the season.
