Novak Djokovic v Reilly Opelka Preview
Head-to-Head: Strangely, Djokovic and Opelka have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Djokovc continued his bright start to the competition and the season with a 6-3, 6-3 drubbing of Gael Monfils bit we all knew that was coming now, didn’t we? After all, the Serb had never lost to Monfils in 17 previous meetings and made it his 18th win over the Frenchman and in fine style.
Having lost in the doubles competition, Djokovic needed just an hour and 14 minutes to come through in his second round as he faced – and saved – just one break-point in the entire match. In turn he earned three break-points on Monfils’ serve and broke him every single time.
Incidentally this follows his opening round win over Rinky Hijikata by an identical scoreline.
Opelka, who had barely played any tennis over the 2022 and 2023 season because of fitness concerns, has come back well this year. While his win over Agustin Gomez Federico in the first round was on expected lines, he had entered his second round match against Matteo Arnaldi as a 7/5 underdog.
He slammed 25 aces and was broken just once but also endured a set-point in the first set before coming through. Opelka will need to dish out some of the same serving stuff but more importantly find a way to break the impenetrable-looking Djokovic serve.
Djokovic v Opelka prediction: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 1/4
Grigor Dimitrov v Jordan Thompson Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Dimitrov leads 2-1 with wins at 2022 Indian Wells and 2024 Brisbane. Thompson’s only victory came in 2019 in Miami.
Following a straight-set win over Yannick Hanfmann, Dimitrov made it two in two when he overcame a fighting Aleksandra Vukic to enter the quarterfinals.
Dimitrov, who was a 1/5 favourite to grab a win in this encounter, needed just 28 minutes to clinch the first set but then failed to break his opponent’s serve in the second.
Vukic saved three match-points on his serve and another one in the ensuing tie-breaker before Dimitrov managed to clinch the win.
Thompson has a few things going off the court but he didn’t let that affect him when he cruised to a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alex Michelsen in his second round encounter.
Thompson, who had stunned Matteo Berrettini in the first round, was on court for an hour and 42 minutes and got the better of his opponent’s serve four times in the win.
He could put up another fight here against Dimitrov.
Dimitrov v Thompson prediction: Thompson to win a set – Yes: 4/6
Nicolas Jarry v Jiri Lehecka Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been three previous matches between these two players including two at the Challenger level. It’s 1-1 in the Challengers while Lehecka defeated Jarry in Adelaide last year.
Having eased past Mariano Navone in the first round, Jarry overturned the odds to stun Benjamin Bonzi in the second round.
Jarry, who was a 7/5 underdog against Bonzi, cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over his French opponent to book a quarterfinal spot for the first time in a competition since Rome last year. In fact, Jarry hasn’t won back to back matches in a hardcourt competition since the 2024 Miami Masters.
He will now need to do a lot better against an opponent of the quality of Lehecka who is gunning for a spot in the top 20 in the world.
After shocking Holger Rune in the first round, Jarry overcame Yoshihito Nishioka in the second in a hard-fought encounter that went to three sets. Jarry was on court for two hours and 22 minutes before clinching the win.
And he will start a huge favourite here too.
Jarry v Lehecka prediction: Lehecka to win: 1/2
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard v Jakub Mensik Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came in a clay court match on the Challenger circuit. Mpetshi Perricard had won it in three, gruelling sets that saw the final set go into a tie-breaker which went his way 13-11.
Mpetshi Perricard’s rich vein of form continued with a second round win over the much more fancied Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe had gone into the encounter as a 7/10 favourite but Mpetshi Perricard clinched a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win that sealed another quarterfinal berth for the 21-year-old from France.
This follows Mpetshi Perricard’s second ATP title win in Basel towards the end of the previous season following which he had featured in only one competition at the highest level.
This victory and subsequent entry into the quarterfinals takes him a step closer to breaking back into the top 30 again and a win over Jakub Mensik might seal that deal for him.
Mensik himself has shown some sparkle and that was on display in his 6-3, 6-2 crushing of Dusan Lajovic in the second round. Earlier he had gone past Mikhail Kukushkin too.
What this means is that Mensik will also move to a career-best ranking next week irrespective of this result and that, by itself, should be big news. Can he, however, tackle the Mpetshi Perricard form?
Mpetshi Perricard v Mensik prediction: Mpetshi Perricard to win: 4/6
