Aryna Sabalenka v Marie Bouzkova Preview

Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both of which came in hardcourt competitions. It’s 1-1 on head to head with Sabalenka having won at the 2023 Miami Open and Bouzkova getting her revenge in Washington last year.

Sabalenka took her time to get going but the good news for her was that she won her third round encounter in straight sets.

That wasn’t before Yulia Putintseva had kept the world number one on court for an hour and 51 minutes, and almost given her a scare as she served for the first set at 5-3. Sabalenka went on to win 7-6 (2), 6-4.

This follows Sabalenka’s season-opening win over Renata Zarazua which also came in straight sets but not before her opponent had managed to push her in the opening set.

It’s these slow starts that could be an issue for Sabalenka as she takes on Marie Bouzkova who stunned Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

After having struggled past Talia Gibson in the first round and overcome Jelena Ostapenko in the second, Bouzkova overcame 11/10 odds to prevent an all-Belarusian quarterfinal.

We can expect this to be a fighting match in which Bouzkova wins a set.

Sabalenka v Bouzkova prediction: Bpuzkova to win a set – Yes: 8/11

Ons Jabeur v Mirra Andreeva Preview

Head-to-Head: They have faced each other once before this with Andreeva routing Jabeur in that second round match at the 2024 Australian Open.

Jabeur will be mighty relieved with the way she has come back at the start of this new season. Some of her sparkle of old has been on display in this competition as she romped into the quarterfinal by registering her third successive win in the tournament.

After having eased past Saisai Zheng and shocked Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first two rounds, Jabeur was pushed into the third set by Elina Avanesyan.

She was then broken twice by Avanesyan after having taken the lead and it was only in the 10th game that a third break of serve in the set pulled Jabeur through.

Things will get a lot more challenging as Jabeur now faces the younger and in-form Mirra Andreeva who is sitting pretty ranked 16th in the world.

Andreeva has had two relatively easy wins following her opening round bye, with both Anna Blinkova and Linda Noskova blown away in straight sets.

The question is if Jabeur can put up a better fight than she had at last year’s Australian Open and we certainly think so. The other, more pressing matter is if that fight would be enough to take Jabeur through to the semifinal.

We doubt that.

Jabeur v Andreeva prediction: Andreeva to win: 1/2

Ashlyn Krueger v Polina Kudermetova Preview

Head-to-Head: This will be the very first meeting between Krueger and Kudermetova.

World number 64 Krueger had been knocked out in the first round of this competition last year. She had also failed to win three matches in a row in any of the tournaments she played in 2024.

All of a sudden, she finds herself with three successive victories under her belt which includes the prize scalp of Anna Kalinskaya. In her latest match, Krueger eased past Suzan Lamens to cement a quarterfinal berth.

If one thought, however, that Krueger’s performances are a bit of a surprise, Polina Kudermetova’s showing takes it another level of shock.

Ranked 107th in the world before the start of the tournament and with a career-best ranking of 106th, Kudermetova was forced to come through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw.

Since then she has been a 11/10 underdog against Xinyu Wang in her opener, 6/5 odds against Liudmilla Samsonova in the second round and 7/5 in her third round match against Daria Kasatkina.

And she has won them all, including a comeback-from-behind win over Kasatkina.

Expect another stiff battle here with nothing to separate these two players till the very end.

Krueger v Kudermetova prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5

Kimberly Birrell v Anhelina Kalinina Preview

Head-to-Head: Birrell and Kalinina have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Birrell continues to surprise everyone. With a career-best ranking of 100th in the world, Birrell got an entry into this competition as a wild-card and in each of the three matches she has played so far, the Aussie has been the underdog.

It started with a three-set, comeback-from-behind win over countrywoman Priscilla Hon in the first round despite starting out at 19/20 odds in that encounter. Against Emma Navarro she was 7/2 to overcome her opponent which she did in straight sets.

And in her latest, third round match, Birrell usurped Anastasia Potapova 7-6 (2), 6-2 to make it to the quarterfinals.

Kalinina has scripted her own story rather nicely with wins over Wang Yafan, Diana Shnaider and Yue Yuan in the first three rounds. And while she was the underdog in each of those three, her victory against Shnaider was one of the upsets of the competition.

Shnaider was 1/6 to win that but Kalinina managed to pick a three-set victory there.

Expect this to be another three-set thriller that edges Kalinina’s way.

Birrell v Kalinina prediction: Kalinina to win in three sets: 3/1
