Paula Badosa v Peyton Stearns Preview
Head-to-Head: There has been one previous meeting between these two players and Badosa had beaten Stearns 6-2, 7-5 at last year’s Cincinnati Open.
Badosa will be hard-pressed for a solid showing here as she looks for a final tune up for the Australian Open following a poor showing last week.
Featuring in Brisbane, the world number 12 Badosa was a 1/4 favourite in her opener against Elina Avanesyan but was sent packing from the tournament in three sets. The good news for Badosa is that she wouldn’t have to go too far, taking a short flight over to Adelaide where she features in this competition as the fifth seed.
The problem for her is that Peyton Stearns might be ranked 47th in the world but she has been a consistent thorn in the fleshes of some of the top players.
As recently as the previous week, Stearns upset Russian Veronika Kudermetova in the opening round before taking Daria Kasatkina to the third set where she lost 7-5. She then managed to send Maria Sakkari packing from the qualifiers of this tournament too to make the main draw.
A Rabat Open winner last year, one can expect Stearns to give Badosa a run for her money in this one.
Badosa v Stearns prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Marketa Vondrousova v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Vondrousova leads 2-1 on head to head. All of these have come in hardcourt competitions, in Chicago, Doha and Moscow.
This is a battle between two players ranked in their 30s – before the rankings get updated again at the start of the second week – and could prove to be a bit of a battle.
Interestingly, both these players haven’t featured in any competitive matches so far this year and will be opening things up for the first time in the lead-up to the season’s first Grand Slam.
Vondrousova has had her fitness woes and that has meant that she hasn’t featured in any tennis since last year’s Wimbledon. After having won the title at that competition in 2023, she was knocked out in the very first round.
She will be a bit of an unknown in that sense, an aspect that Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova would understand fairly well. Pavlyuchenkova herself has had injuries pushing her back and at the end of the 2022 season she had fallen to 367th in the world.
Pavlyuchenkova came back to end 2023 ranked 58th and will now break into the top 30 after a fairly decent showing in 2024 which included her making the third round at the US Open.
Backing Pavlyuchenkova to take this one as Vondrousova looks to test out her fitness.
Vondrousova v Pavlyuchenkova prediction: Pavlyuchenkova to win: 1/1
