Marcos Giron v Tomas Martin Etcheverry Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the hardcourts of the San Diego Open and Giron had won that encounter in 2022.
Marcos Giron is in his sixth appearance at the Australian Open and for the first time ever in his career, the world number 46 will take to court for a second round match.
Following on from a quarterfinal appearance at the Adelaide International last week, Giron needed to overcome the loss of the first set in his opener against Yannick Hanfmann before winning it in four.
The American was on court for over three hours and lost his serve five times in the match but found a way past Hanfmann’s serve on seven occasions. This was after he had 23 break-point opportunities.
He now takes on a player who has made his name playing and going deep into clay-court competitions. Tomas Martin Etcheverry hasn’t yet won an ATP title but all of his eight Challenger and Futures titles have come on red dirt.
Which is why a win over Flavio Cobolli in the first round here would be quite confidence-inducing for the Argentine. This isn’t to say his record at the Australian Open has been as poor as Giron’s – Etcheverry had made the third round here last year.
Still backing Giron to go past Etcheverry and make it his joint-best showing in a Grand Slam.
Giron v Etcheverry prediction: Giron to win: 19/20
Joao Fonseca v Lorenzo Sonego Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of Bucharest last year and Fonseca had won that opening round match in two hard-fought sets.
When Joao Fonseca took to court for his opening round match against the world number nine Andrey Rublev, he was playing his first main draw match of the season at the highest level.
Still, he was 8-0 on win-loss for the year, having won the Canberra Challenger before this and then needed to make it to the main draw here through the qualifiers.
What was fascinating about his record before going up against Rublev was the fact that he had won all matches without dropping a set.
Still, against the world number nine, he was 13/10 to upset his opponent. And that’s exactly what he did, in, straight sets again!
Fonseca’s performances have meant that irrespective of this match’s result, he would have broken into the top 100 by the time the next rankings are released. Which is not to say that he doesn’t have a chance here against Lorenzo Sonego who has himself made a solid start to the tournament.
Sonego overcame Stan Wawrinka in four sets to seal his second round berth, having done that on four previous occasions at this tournament too.
He had earlier also won his openers in Hong Kong and Auckland but can he now take on the challenge of Fonseca here?
Fonseca v Sonego prediction: Fonseca to win in straight sets: 11/8
