Danielle Collins v Destanee Aiava Preview
Head-to-Head: Collins and Aiava have never faced off before this.
Danielle Collins is a former Australian Open runner-up but since making it there, she has been ousted in the third and second round respectively. Which is why a first round win here over Daria Snigur would have been quite pleasing to say the least.
In a match that went on for an hour and 41 minutes, Collins took out Snigur 7-6 (4), 6-3 to set up this meeting with Destanee Aiava.
Having kick-started the season with a defeat in her very first – and only – match of the season at Adelaide, Collins needed a powerful performance to get things back on track. She did serve up seven aces but was broken three times on her way to getting the win.
Things got a lot tougher for Aiava though.
She was up against the 7/10 favourite Greet Minnen in her opener and was on court for over three hours for her three-set victory. At one stage, in fact, Aiava was down a set and 0-3 and soon enough Minnen had a chance to serve out for the match.
Aiava broke her twice to force the match into the third where Minnen was 5-3 up again. Again Aiava broke back, only to face two more match-points on her own serve, then missed a match-point before clinching it in the tie-breaker.
Collins v Aiava prediction: Collins to win in straight sets: 10/11
Madison Keys v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Preview
Head-to-Head: This will be the first meeting between Keys and Ruse.
Madison Keys is a former US Open finalist but since making it there in 2017, she hasn’t been able to get there again.
Sure, Keys has a Cincinnati Open title to her name and a few others at the lower level across different surfaces but the kind of form she has shown on tour this early part of the season, she would like to convert into something monumental.
Following on from her quarterfinal appearance at the Auckland Open, Keys overcame opponents of the likes of Jessica Pegula, Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko to win the Adelaide International.
And making it her sixth win in a row, Keys eased past Ann Li 6-4, 7-5 to reserve her place in the second round where she takes on Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
Ruse started off her season at the Australian Open qualifiers, beating her three opponents to make it to the main draw. And facing Irina Begu in the opener here, she raced off to a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Against Keys, however, Ruse will need to do a lot more than what she has done so far, probably try and emulate the manner in which she got the better of Paula Badosa and Barbora Krejcikova in her career in the past.
Keys v Ruse prediction: Keys to win in straight sets: 4/6
