Lorenzo Sonego was a 2/5 favourite going into his Australian Open first round match against Stan Wawrinka and lived up to those by clinching a four-set win over the Swiss player.
What that meant was that Wawrinka continued to struggle to get going despite trying his best to try and get back close to his glory days.
Once ranked third in the world, Wawrinka did end the 2023 season by breaking into the top 50 again but has fallen by the wayside since. In 2024, in fact, he won a mere nine matches in the whole of the season and entered the 2025 season ranked 161st.
And while he as moved up five places because he didn’t have points to defend from the previous season, Wawrinka will want more than just some superficial movement in the rankings – wins and deeper runs in tournaments is what he would be after at this late stage of his career.
Cazaux Still Finding His Feet
It’s early days in his career for Arthur Cazaux and early days in the season too for the Frenchman.
He was bundled out of the Brisbane International in the very first round by Dusan Lajovic but started off well in the following two tournaments – winning a round at each, the Adelaide International and Australian Open.
In the former, he ousted Adam Walton before coming through against Sebastian Baez at the latter.
What’s interesting to see is Cazaux does not have a great record in indoor hardcourt competitions but then it’s no different for his opponent here.
