Xinyu Wang v Rebecca Marino Head to Head
Wang and Marino have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Wang Needs a Win
Xinyu Wang had his a career-best ranking of 32nd in the world last year and while she has fallen just three spots from there, she is in a desperate need of a win. Or three.
Because it is soon going to get to a point in the season where her ranking points from the previous year are going to get knocked off and Wang could fall off the ranking perch.
Also because she hasn’t made any sort of a start to the tennis season in 2025.
It started with a first round defeat at the hands of Polina Kudermetova at the Brisbane International before she managed to qualify for the Adelaide International. But then again in the main draw, Wang lost the very first match to Emerson Jones despite being a 1/6 favourite.
And when Wang lost to Paula Badosa in the first round of the Australian Open, it meant that she had acquired a 0-6 record over her last six main draw matches.
She desperately needs a win.
Marino Forced to Play on the ITF Circuit
Much like Wang, Rebecca Marino’s career-best ranking is also in the top 40 but over recent times her performances have tapered off.
So much so that Marino is now outside the top 100 on the WTA charts and unless she starts registering wins at the highest level, direct qualification for Grand Slams is going to get tougher.
Marino did make the second round at the Auckland Open to kick-start her season but then fell to Katie Boulter in the Australian Open opener.
She went on to feature in an ITF competition in Bangalore after that where Marino made the quarterfinal before falling to Leolia Jeanjean.
Can she put up a fight against the struggling Wang?
Wang v Marino Prediction
Both players are coming off some poor form but the one advantage that Marino does have over Wang is she has earned a few wins at the lower circuit on the way. While this doesn’t guarantee that she will hold an edge over Wang, it could make for a fighting contest unlike what the odds suggest.
