Tallon Griekspoor v Jesper de Jong Head to Head
Griekspoor and de Jong have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Griekspoor in a Tough Battle with Gasquet
Having begun his season directly at the Australian Open, Griekspoor would have been a touch undercooked coming into this competition after he lost his opener at the season’s first major.
A straight set win over Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round would have helped his cause in but that was nothing like the kind of match he endured in the second round against Richard Gasquet.
In a late night encounter on Thursday that went on for over two hours, Griekspoor was able to edge out Gasquet 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to seal his quarterfinal berth.
The difference in the two players came in the form of Griekspoor’s ability to play the clutch moments well – he saved eight of the nine points he faced. This included two in the seventh game and four in the ninth game of the final set.
And the first one he got in that decider, Griekspoor broke Gasquet to clinch victory.

Back to Back Shock Wins for de Jong
For a player to have entered the tournament on the back of opening round losses at two Challenger tournaments and another qualifying loss at the Australian Open would have meant he had his back facing the wall.
Jesper de Jong was 8/5 underdog heading into his first round match against Quentin Halys and led him by a set and 2-0 in the second before his opponent retired from the encounter.
In the second, there was no such help from Flavio Cobolli against whom de Jong was 8/5 odds again. He faced a tie-breaker in the second set but still came through in straight sets to seal his quarterfinal berth.
In doing so, de Jong has now won back to back matches in an ATP tournament for the first time in his career. Can he make it three in three?
Griekspoor v de Jong Prediction
Griekspoor experience and the manner in which he has come back and clinched a couple of wins here after starting the season out late gives us relative confidence he should bag this one. Backing him for a straight-set victory.
Griekspoor v de Jong Tips
- Griekspoor to win: 2/5
