Mertens v Li Head to Head
Mertens and Li will be facing off for the first time in their competitive careers.
Mertens Sends Wang Packing
Xinyu Wang had shown a remarkable turnaround in fortunes in Singapore after having made an underwhelming start to the season. Her run, however, was ended by Elise Mertens in the semifinals and rather easily at that.
In a match that lasted less than an hour and a half, Mertens clinched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Xinyu despite losing her serve once in both the sets played.
Mertens took the lead when she got the better of Xinyu’s serve in the sixth game before dropping her own serve in the very next one. She grabbed another break in the very next game before serving it out.
In the second, Wang went 2-0 up but dropped her serve in the very next game. They went on serve till the eight game before a break came Mertens’ way following which she served it out.
This will be the second final that Mertens will contest in this season following her showing in Hobart. There, she had lost to McCartney Kessler in a three-setter. Will she add to her eight career WTA titles here?

Li Benefits from Fitness-Starved Kalinskaya
Ann Li might have lost in the first round at the Australian Open but her performances otherwise have been solid for a player who started the year ranked 96th in the world.
In fact, second round appearances at both, the Auckland Open and Hobart International would have given her some confidence but not too many would have expected her to make it to the final here.
This will be her fourth final with Li having won one title before this and coming off a finals loss at the Merida Open last year.
Once ranked 44th in the world, Li has shown in this competition why she was rated so highly with wins over Daria Saville, Maria Timofeeva and Kimberly Birrell to make the semifinals. All of them were straight-set victories.
And while she was put to the sword by a top-20 player like Anna Kalinskaya, Li managed to win the opening set in a tie-breaker despite being down 4-2 at one stage.
Kalinskaya retired at the start of the second set because of an injury leaving Li with a chance to double her title count.
Mertens v Li Prediction
While Li has played like a champion, having dropped no sets, the experience of Mertens should shine through here. Backing a hard-fought three-setter that Mertens clinches in the end.
Mertens v Li Tips
- Mertens to win: 1/2
- Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
