Katerina Siniakova v Francesca Jones Preview
Head-to-Head: Siniakova and Jones have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Katerina Siniakova looked to have made a positive start to the season when she took to court at the Adelaide International and won both her qualifiers to enter the main draw.
Since then, however, things have gone really kaput for her with the Czech having lost three matches in a row – first round at Adelaide, Australian Open and Linz Open.
She could look at it differently given that two of those losses came to Iga Swiatek and Diana Shnaider, no pushovers by any stretch but what would worry her is the defeat to Elina Avanesyan last week. She won just five games in that match.
Siniakova now has a good chance to turn things around when she takes on Francesca Jones, a player who has never been ranked higher than 149th in the world.
Jones has rather surprisingly opted not to take part in any of the smaller tournaments like the WTA Mumbai which is going on right now or even those on the ITF circuit. Instead she featured in the qualifiers here and won both to make the main draw.
The only previous tournament she featured in this year came at the Australian Open where she lost in the second qualifier.
Siniakova v Jones prediction: Jones to win a set – Yes: 1/1
Anna Blinkova v Sara Sorribes Tormo Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two players including one at the Ostrava qualifier in 2020 which Sorribes Tormo won. In the other three, Blinkova has a 2-1 lead but her opponent clinched their last meeting in Monastir last year.
Anna Blinkova is riding on good, consistent form coming into this competition. She began her journey for the season at Brisbane, and then played at Adelaide and at the Australian Open.
And in each one of them she made the second round before bowing out. Blinkova went one better last week in Linz when she defeated Sinja Kraus and Elina Svitolina on her way to the quarterfinal before going down to Clara Tauson.
The only question here is if Blinkova is feeling fresh enough, having played in all but one of the five weeks this season so far and featured in at least two matches each week.
As far as Sara Sorribes Tormo goes, the 83rd-ranked player has been forced to play in qualifiers at each one of the competition this season. In the first two tournaments, she was sent packing at that very stage while making the main draw at Linz last week and here again.
In Linz, she also won her opening round match against Lulu Sun, the first main draw win for her this season. Can she double her count now?
Blinkova v Sorribes Tormo prediction: Blinkova to win in straight sets: 2/1
Jaqueline Cristian v Ella Seidel Preview
Head-to-Head: While they have never faced off in a competitive match on the WTA tour, there has been one other meeting between them on the ITF circuit. Cristian had won that encounter.
A semifinalist here last year, Jaqueline Cristian will take to the court again following a successful campaign at the Australian Open.
Having gone into that tournament with just a second round appearance at the 2023 Wimbledon as her best showing, Cristian defeated Petra Martic and Lucia Bronzetti to make the third round there.
The Romanian player could have gone event further when she went a set up against the lucky loser Eva Lys but was shocked in the next two sets.
She had earlier made the second round at the Auckland Open too and now takes on a German qualifier, Ella Seidel for a place in the second round.
Seidel has been trying her hand at qualifying for WTA tournaments all of this season and finally made it through this time. She overcame Lola Radivojevic and Maja Chwalinska to enter the first round where she plays the local, crowd favourite.
With her first main draw win at this level having come only late last year, and with her playing an in-form Cristian, it looks highly unlikely Seidel is progressing any further from here on.
Cristian v Seidel prediction: Cristian to win: 7/10
