Holger Rune v Pedro Martinez Head to Head
Rune and Martinez have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Rune Stretched But Through against Sonego
Lorenzo Sonego was a distant second-favourite going into his opening round against Holger Rune but a fight was expected. Sonego did put up some of that but in the end, it was Rune who came through in straight sets as we had thought he would.
In a match that went on for two hours and 13 minutes, Rune overturned a fighting effort from Sonego in the first set to win 7-6 (4), 6-4 and seal his second round berth.
Having had a mixed start to the season with a first round exit in Brisbane and a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open, Rune was up a break early in the opening set only to see his advantage vanish in the sixth game.
From that point onward, however, Rune faced just one break-point and came through in straight sets.
Rune has featured in this competition on two previous occasions but has lost in the second round at both. The question now is if he can get a third time lucky?

Martinez Surprise for Bautista-Agut
As far as match winning odds go, Roberto Bautista-Agut was a heavy favourite against Pedro Martinez but things did not work out like that.
Martinez, who is more known for his performances on clay, cruised past a struggling Bautista-Agut in a matter of an hour and 41 minutes to set up his meeting with Rune.
Never in his 6-3, 6-2 win did Martinez look in any sort of trouble and while he was broken once, even that came towards the end of the opening set by when he was already 5-2 up.
This was Martinez’s third win in a hardcourt competition this year following a first round win at the Hong Kong Open and Australian Open.
Those wins, however, did come against Francesco Passaro (a fellow clay-courter) and Luciano Darderi who injured himself and retired from their encounter in the second set.
Rune will be a different kettle of fish.
Rune v Martinez Prediction
This should be as straightforward as it can get for Rune and a straight-set win in his favour looks very likely.
Rune v Martinez Tips
- Rune to win in straight sets: 8/13
