Marta Kostyuk v Zeynep Sonmez Head to Head
Kostyuk and Sonmez have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Kostyuk Overturns Poor Start to the Season
Following her opening round exits at both, the Brisbane International and the Adelaide International, Marta Kostyuk would have had a few question-marks around her form heading into the Australian Open.
She seemed to have answered them, for now at least.
Wins over Nao Hibino and Jule Niemeier took her to the third round and while she lost there, Kostyuk can take heart from the fact that she took the eventual semifinalist Paula Badosa to three sets.
Kostyuk had made the second round in this competition last year, which has been her best showing in Qatar. She would think she has a great chance to emulate that this season as she takes on Turkish wildcard Sonmez here.

Sonmez Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match in 2025
Zeynep Sonmez has already featured in five WTA tournaments this season and is yet to win a main draw match.
Making that worse is the fact that in four of those five, she was forced to play in the qualifiers and she did not make it through to the main draw.
The only other tournament in which Sonmez featured in the main draw was at the Australian Open where she made a direct entry and was sent packing by the 8/5 underdog Talia Gibson.
This comes on the back of a solid season that Sonmez had had last year, in which she won the title in Merida having also made the quarterfinal in Monastir.
Can she push an opponent here who is ranked 73 places ahead of her?
Kostyuk v Sonmez Prediction
Kostyuk might not have had the best returns this year but she has done way better than the struggling Sonmez. That, combined with the gulf in their rankings make this is a relatively straightforward call – Kostyuk to scythe through her opponent’s defences.
Kostyuk v Sonmez Tips
- Kostyuk to win in straight sets: 10/11
