Casper Ruud v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Ruud has won them both. Both matches, however, came on clay – at the 2021 Geneva Open and 2022 Italian Open.
Ruud in a Scrappy Win over Munar
Following a couple of straightforward wins in his previous two rounds, Casper Ruud had gone into his semifinals against Jaume Munar as a 1/3 favourite.
And after romping to an easy win in the first set in which he broke Munar twice and did not face a single break-point in the set, it looked like the match was headed in just one direction.
Strangely though, he fell away in the second set, getting broken twice in back to back games and all of a sudden it turned into anyone’s match.
At 4-4 in the decider, Ruud then lost his serve as well, leaving Munar to serve it out. Ruud broke back and then in the tie-breaker that followed, he clinched it, some two hours and 31 minutes later.
Can he now win his second career title on a hardcourt surface?

Shapovalov Shock Run Continues
Denis Shapovalov hadn’t quite made the kind of start to the season as he would have thought.
Then again, he hadn’t had the best of the previous seasons too, and while he had improved from 109th at the end of the previous season to his 56th at the start of this, Shapovalov looked to be a far cry from where he was when he had hit his career-best of 10th.
Till the start of this tournament that is. Here, it’s like Shapovalov has turned a leaf.
It started with a hard-fought win over Miomir Kecmanovic, and that was followed by a stunning, comeback from behind victory against Taylor Fritz.
Tomas Machac, another top player at his career-best ranking of 25th, was sent packing in the quarterfinals before Shapovalov defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets in the semis.
With that kind of performance in a tournament against these top players not only will Shapovalov think he has a chance to win this here but will also take this confidence in the tournaments to come.

Shapovalov starts a favourite for us in a hardcourt competition against Ruud, especially in this kind of form. We could also see a fight that takes them to a third set.
