Lorenzo Sonego v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the qualifiers of the 2024 Paris Masters and Sonego had won it in three difficult sets.
Sonego Coming off Opening Rotterdam Loss
While Lorenzo Sonego would be a tad disappointed about losing his opener at the Rotterdam Open, he still has a solid showing at the Australian Open to look at.
Sonego had overcome Stan Wawrinka, Joao Fonseca, Fabian Marozsan and Learner Tien on his way to making the quarterfinals of the event and it took Ben Shelton to put a full stop to his campaign.
Earlier in the season, Sonego had also reached the second round in Hong Kong and Auckland but couldn’t go beyond.
What’s interesting to see is that Sonego’s overall record across all the circuits is better indoors than it is on outdoor hardcourt. So while he did lose to Rune last week in one of those indoor tournaments, he would be looking to take confidence from his record at them.

van de Zandschulp Needs a Win
Botic van de Zandschulp hasn’t won a main draw match in 2025. And he has featured in four tournaments so far including his home competition in Rotterdam last week in which, as luck would have it, he was drawn to play the eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz.
To be fair to van de Zandschulp, he put up a strong showing, taking Alcaraz to three sets but will that be enough?
Especially when he enters this competition on the back of three other defeats too and at least two of those couldn’t really be blamed on the draw – to Nishesh Basavareddy in Auckland and Tallon Griekspoor in Montpellier.
van de Zandschulp also has a strong record indoors, with two of his titles at the lower level having come on this surface but things could get a tad worse first before they get better for him one thinks.
Sonego v van de Zandschulp Prediction
Sonego has some good form going for him, especially against players ranked outside the top 20 and at 8/11, his win comes at tempting odds. Backing him to find a way past his Dutch opponent.
Sonego v van de Zandschulp Tips
- Sonego to win: 8/11
