Aryna Sabalenka v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head
This rivalry first began on the ITF circuit way back in 2017 but since then they have played six more matches and Sabalenka leads 4-2.
This includes a third round win for her at the US Open last year and another at the 2023 Wimbledon in the fourth round. Alexandrova’s last win over the world number one came in the final of the 2022 Rosmalen Open.
Sabalenka Returns after Australian Open Final
Aryna Sabalenka was quite upset at the end of the Australian Open final, having just lost to Madison Keys in a difficult three-setter.
The world number one was hunting for her third successive Australian Open title and she had fallen short by a whisker. On the given day, Keys had proved to be the better player.
Take nothing away from Sabalenka though, who has featured in two tournaments this season and made the final at both. She won the Brisbane International title by beating Polina Kudermetova in the title-decider before featuring in the season’s first Grand Slam next.
There, Sabalenka overcame Clara Tauson, Mirra Andreeva and Paula Badosa on the way to the finals.
Here, Sabalenka had a first round bye and will kick-start her attempt to end Iga Swiatek’s run in this competition.

Alexandrova Eases Past Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu had earned herself another wildcard to feature here and she would have been hoping for an easier draw. Unfortunately for her, she came up against the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova in the very first round and that was the end of her as far as the tournament is concerned.
That’s because Alexandrova found herself a way to get past her British opponent, winning 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 43 minutes.
Alexandrova, who had entered the tournament on the back of a sizzling showing at the Linz Open where she won the title at the expense of Dayana Yastremska in the final, lost her serve three times in the match but was able to get past Raducanu on five occasions.
She overcame a 1-3 deficit in the opening set to run through five games and was then broken twice in the second set to fall 1-3 behind again. This time around she levelled things out to get to 5-5, broke Raducanu and served out the match.
Things are about to get a whole lot tougher in round two.
Sabalenka v Alexandrova Prediction
While Sabalenka should still come through in this one, Alexandrova’s previous record against the world number one and her current form make her a favourite to come close to winning a set here.
