Francisco Cerundolo v Joao Fonseca Head to Head

Cerundolo and Fonseca have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Cerundolo Makes Another Argentina Open Final

A finalist in the 2021 edition of this competition, Francisco Cerundolo now has a chance to do what he had failed to that year. He will be take on Joao Fonseca in another final here as the Argentine now looks to add a fourth career title to his name.

Cerundolo, who had a 2-2 win-loss start in the Australian swing, has come back strongly on his favourite surface with four successive wins including one against the world number two Alexander Zverev.

That came in the quarterfinals before Cerundolo dispatched Pedro Martinez in straight sets in the semifinals to set up this delicious encounter in the final.

In a match that went on for an hour and 34 minutes, Cerundolo saved all the seven break-points he faced while getting the better of Martinez on three occasions to win 6-2, 6-4.

Can he now win his first title since his Umag Open triumph last season?

Fonseca Clinches Maiden Final Berth

João Fonseca continued to show what he’s capable of when he clinched his first ever finals berth on the ATP circuit.

Just 18 years old, Fonseca had come into this tournament on the back of a Challenger title and a victory over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open and has gone on to show that his performances are surface-agnostic.

The Brazilian defeated Serbia’s Laslo Djere 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 in a tense encounter that lasted two hours and 37 minutes to reach the final.

In a cagey first set, neither player earned a break of serve before Fonseca won the following tie-breaker. The second set also looked to be going in the same direction but Fonseca then broke to go 5-3 up.

He got broken while serving for the match and then missed a match-point in the following game before Djere broke again to claim the set.

Just when one thought the encounter could end up with a spicy final set, Fonseca took control with a couple of breaks of serves and a three-set win.

Fonseca had earlier surprised Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round before edging past Federico Coria and Mariano Navone in three sets apiece.

Can he overcome another Argentine here?

Cerundolo v Fonseca Prediction

Fonseca is proving to be very powerful but Cerundolo also enters this one with some confidence from the kind of wins he has achieved in this tournament. Cerundolo could just about edge this contest.
