Fonseca Clinches Maiden Final Berth
João Fonseca continued to show what he’s capable of when he clinched his first ever finals berth on the ATP circuit.
Just 18 years old, Fonseca had come into this tournament on the back of a Challenger title and a victory over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open and has gone on to show that his performances are surface-agnostic.
The Brazilian defeated Serbia’s Laslo Djere 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 in a tense encounter that lasted two hours and 37 minutes to reach the final.
In a cagey first set, neither player earned a break of serve before Fonseca won the following tie-breaker. The second set also looked to be going in the same direction but Fonseca then broke to go 5-3 up.
He got broken while serving for the match and then missed a match-point in the following game before Djere broke again to claim the set.
Just when one thought the encounter could end up with a spicy final set, Fonseca took control with a couple of breaks of serves and a three-set win.
Fonseca had earlier surprised Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round before edging past Federico Coria and Mariano Navone in three sets apiece.
Can he overcome another Argentine here?
