Eva Lys v Irina Begu Head to Head
This will be their first meeting.
Lys Comes Through the Qualifiers
The 2025 Australian Open story of Eva Lys will be recanted over the years and the recognition she might get from that would be fully deserved.
She had been knocked out in the third round of qualifying there and was on the verge of packing her bags and leaving the arena. Lys was asked to wait, however, and just a few minutes before Anna Kalinskaya was expected to take to court for her opener against Kimberly Birrell, the Russian withdrew because of injury.
Lys was the lucky loser who got the chance, eased past Birrell in the first round, then edged out Varvara Gracheva before overcoming Jaqueline Cristian to make it to the fourth round of the Grand Slam.
And while her campaign ended there, to give you a context about how solid that showing was, Lys had taken part in 10 previous majors and won just one round in all.
Later, Lys lost in her Linz Open first round to Petra Martic but has now beaten Ann Li and Kamilla Rakhimova to make it to the main draw here. And she will think she has a chance here.

Begu Hoping for a Rare Main Draw Win
It was at the China Open last year that Irina Begu had last won a main draw match at the highest level on the WTA circuit.
Since then, however, Begu has been knocked out before winning a main draw match in four of the tournaments she has participated in.
That includes three this year, with Begu failing to qualify for the Adelaide International and going down in her opener at the Australian Open and Cluj-Napoca.
Here, she defeated the 17-year-old Syrian Leah Baroudi in her first qualifier before overturning the 7/5 odds against Yue Yuan to win the second round in straight sets too, in turning making the main draw.
Can she now seal off her maiden win for the season, facing a fellow qualifier?
Lys v Begu Prediction
No prizes for guessing who the favourite is – Eva Lys, who is in better form and has a decent hardcourt record as compared to Begu. We will have go with Lys to clinch a place in the second round.
