Jessica Pegula v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Pegula leads 3-1, having won in Montreal in 2023, Rome in 2022 and Cincinnati in 2020. Samsonova’s only win came at the 2021 Wimbledon.
Pegula Coming off Doha Quarterfinals
Jessica Pegula has been a top five player in the world for a while now and while she has made a Grand Slam final just once – last US Open where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka – she has three WTA 1000 titles to her name.
In the Middle East though, Pegula has never made the final of either of these two WTA 1000 tournaments with her semifinal showing at this very competition in 2023 being her best showing.
Last week in Doha, Pegula had a chance to emulate that and even go a round further but the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova came back from being a set down to clinch the match.
Pegula had defeated Elina Svitolina and Daria Kasatkina in the two rounds before that – two tough opponents – and she starts things off here in an equally challenging encounter.

Samsonova Sends Pavlyuchenkova Packing
Liudmilla Samsonova was 1/1 to win her opener against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova but she played like she was an overwhelming favourite, defeating the fellow Russian in straight sets.
In a first round match that went on for 67 minutes, Samsonova did not face a single break-point in her 6-2, 6-2 rout of Pavlyuchenkova. In turn she had seven opportunities to break Samsonova and did it four times.
This follows a bit of a mixed season for Samsonova, who had earlier made the semifinal at the Adelaide International but also seen opening defeats in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi.
Last week in Doha, Samsonova eased past Lulu Sun but went down fighting to the eventual finalist Jelena Ostapenko. Can she now test the Pegula prowesses?
