Alex de Minaur v Marin Cilic Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both players have won two apiece.
Cilic won at the 2016 US Open while de Minaur made it 1-1 in Queen’s in 2021. Following that, they played in two Davis Cup ties and both won one apiece.
De Minaur 13-3 for the Year after Doha Quarters
Alex de Minaur had gone into the Doha Open with zero losses to players who weren’t named Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz.
He won a couple of rounds there, defeating Roman Safiullin and Botic van de Zandschulp but then missed out on match-points in his quarterfinal against Andrey Rublev before going down in the final set tie-breaker.
That was just his third defeat of the year to go with 13 wins – including a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open and a final round in Rotterdam.
There’s not much of a break for De Minaur, who returns to play in Dubai this week and with the draw being much lighter, it could be his chance to win a title for the first time this season.

Cilic Puts up a Fight on Return
Marin Cilic’s return to competitive tennis following an injury-related break came later than he expected but the good news was he looked fully fit in his Doha opener last week.
The Croat, who was once ranked number three in the world, was drawn to take on Carlos Alcaraz in the first round there and put up a strong display before his opponent won 6-4, 6-4.
A two-time quarterfinalist at this event, Cilic had come back from a knee surgery late late year and gone on to win the Hangzhou Open title – making him the lowest-ranked player at 777th in the world to win one.
Unfortunately for Cilic, he was unable to return to the circuit this year on time because of what he described as ‘minor setbacks’ related to his knee before the start of the season but it looks like all that is behind him.
He could test de Minaur here.
de Minaur v Cilic Prediction
While de Minaur looks hard to surmount, Cilic might not be a pushover as was on display when he took to court for his opener last week against Alcaraz. We can expect this to be a keen tussle for a while before the Aussie clinches it.
